Healing Trauma with EMDR Therapy

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals heal from trauma, PTSD, and distressing life experiences. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements, gentle tapping, or auditory cues—to help your brain process and integrate traumatic memories, reducing their emotional intensity and impact.

How Does EMDR Work?

Traumatic memories are often stored in the brain as "sensory memories," which can trigger distressing emotions and sensations long after the event has passed. EMDR helps you reprocess these memories so they become less overwhelming and more manageable.

During a session, your therapist will guide you through a structured process that allows your brain to form new, healthier associations with past experiences.

Eight Phases of EMDR Therapy

1

History

Gathering background information and trauma history.

2

Preparation

Building coping skills and establishing safety.

3

Assessment

Identifying target memories and measuring baseline symptoms.

4

Desensitization

Processing traumatic memories with bilateral stimulation.

5

Installation

Strengthening positive beliefs and self-concept.

6

Body Scan

Checking for any remaining physical sensations.

7

Closure

Ensuring stability and grounding before ending the session.

8

Re-evaluation

Assessing progress and planning next steps.

What to Expect in EMDR Sessions

You remain awake and in control throughout the process.
Bilateral stimulation may involve following a moving light, gentle tapping, or auditory tones.
You will not be asked to relive your trauma in detail; instead, you'll work to change your response to distressing memories.
Many people experience relief, increased autonomy, and improved self-esteem as treatment progresses.
